Cherry Candy
A fragrant, sweet coffee with a pleasant acidity and a taste of red fruit. The most dominant notes are those of cherry, chocolate covered strawberry or dark grape. Expect a medium tea body with higher acidity. On filter, this is a juicy coffee with notes of cherry haribo, milk chocolate and black tea. On espresso, the higher acidity and flavors of cherry liqueur, hibiscus, dark chocolate or even watermelon stand out.
One of the two Ugandan coffees we've selected for this season is a community lot of farmers in the Rwenzori region of central-western Uganda, near the border with the Congo. The lot, called LavaCherry, involved over 300 small-scale farmers whose farms are located between 1500 and 2000 meters above sea level. The conditions for growing coffee in the Rwenzori region are ideal. The soil is rich in minerals and nutrients, and the regular alternation of rainy and sunny days means that all the conditions are in place to produce a quality selection of coffee.
We have selected this coffee for you in collaboration with our importer The Coffee Quest. Their partner in Uganda is Agri Evolve, who oversee the production and processing of the coffee and provide the farmers with all the necessary infrastructure. Whether it be washing stations, dry mills, coffee drying facilities or all the necessary analysis. It also oversees the entire process in terms of quality control, efficiency and sustainability. In addition to all these facilities, they also fund community projects in the areas of education, access to drinking water or financial literacy for farmers and their families.
Lot called LavaCherry is a blend of SL14 and SL28 varieties processed using the dry method. These varieties, originating from Kenya, are typical for their juiciness and higher acidity. After harvesting, the cherries are moved to the Nyabirongo station managed by Agri Evolve. Here, the cherries first undergo a 48-hour fermentation, which adds more fruity notes and sweetness to the resulting flavour profile. The cherries are then dried in a high layer in the sun on elevated drying racks before being spread in a thin layer and gradually dried to the desired moisture content with regular rotation.
Both of our Ugandans this year are the first product of our importers new project in Uganda. We are thrilled with the results so far and look forward to seeing how this coffee tastes to you!
